Lightning Protection Systems

Air terminals, down conductors, clamps and fixings, and CASKWeld exothermic welding: a complete lightning protection system from CASK STEEL, designed to work together with our earthing systems.

How a lightning protection system works

  • Air terminals (lightning rods) on the highest points of the structure capture the strike.
  • Down conductors of copper or aluminium carry the lightning current quickly to the ground.
  • The earthing system dissipates the energy safely into the ground.

Together they protect people, buildings and sensitive equipment, reduce downtime from strikes and help meet building codes in thunderstorm-prone regions.

Lightning protection clamps, saddles and fixings

Fixings and clamps

Flat conductor and ridge saddles, strike pads, DC tape clips, one-hole clips, cable saddles, square tape clamps, bi-metallic connectors, test clamps and cable T clamps.

CASKWeld exothermic welding

CASKWeld is an exothermic welding system that needs no external heat source. It makes strong, highly conductive connections that are permanent and do not loosen over time, even under repeated fault currents.

  • Moulds of high-density graphite, each good for 50 to 80 welds; custom moulds for power stations, railways and other special applications
  • Weld metal in powder and tablet form, in packs from 15 to 250 g
  • Connections: bar to bar, bar to earth rod, cable to bar, cable to cable and cable to earth rod
  • Tools: handle clamps, retaining discs, cleaning brushes, mould scrapers, sealing compound and flint guns

Frequently asked questions

Copper or aluminium conductors?

Copper has the higher conductivity and suits most installations, including below-ground connections. Aluminium is lighter and lower in cost and is often used for above-ground air terminations and down conductors. Bi-metallic connectors join the two safely.

Why use exothermic welding instead of mechanical clamps?

An exothermic weld is a molecular bond with conductivity at least equal to the conductor. It cannot loosen or corrode at the joint, so it is preferred for buried and inaccessible connections.

Can you supply a complete system for a project?

Yes. Air terminals, conductors, fixings, earthing materials and CASKWeld can be supplied together. Send us your roof plan or bill of quantities.
